Faculty Member, Faculty of Education, Health and Social Sciences

Lecturer (Modern Languages)

About

I joined the School of Education at the University of the West of Scotland, with a focus on Modern Languages, in 2011. Among other tasks, I will have responsibility for initial teacher training and the preparation to provide Modern Languages in the Primary Schools.

I have previously worked with the Department of Cultural Business at the Glasgow Caledonian University on the EU Framework 6 funded integrated project, the DYLAN Project (http://www.dylan-project.org/ ).  This international project, which brought together 20 research partners across 13 countries in Europe, investigated the conditions under which conditions Europe’s linguistic diversity could be an asset to knowledge and economy.

I received my PhD in 2010 from the University of Aberdeen in Celtic, with a focus on second language education of Gaelic in Scotland, and the contribution secondary school learning provision could make to national Reversing Language Shift goals.

Additionally I have conducted research for Glasgow City Council and Bòrd na Gàidhlig on adult learning of Gaelic and the evaluation of Gaelic Language Plans, respectively.  I have also been the primary grant holder on 3 community initiatives for Gaelic under the Taic Freumhan Coimhearsnachd scheme.
